Wrestling is a close-contact, physical sport where the possibility of injury and
transmission of skin disorders or other illnesses exists. The following is our club's
policy on safety and health issues:
Safety
- Headgear must be worn during live
wrestling practices and matches. You will be expected to bring your headgear to
all practices and matches. If you forget to bring your own, you will have to go
home to get them, or you can use some of our "special" loaners if they're
available.
- The use of a mouthguard is highly recommended, but is optional.
You might want to ask your dentist if he/she can make you a custom pair in our
team colors. You can also get mouthguards at any sporting good store and most large department stores.
Your mother and girlfriend/boyfriend really don't want to see your ears looking like this.
Health
Since we live in a world full of bugs, viruses, bacterias, and fungi, there's
really no practical way of avoiding these things, so we have to adopt practices
that will minimize our exposure to them. The following are our club's policies
and recommendations on these matters.
- Wrestlers will not be allowed to wrestle if they are ill or have a contagious
skin disorder. Acne and posion oak are not contagious, but you should show
consideration for your wrestling partners by covering these things when possible.
- Wrestlers should come to practice clean and smelling nice.
- Wrestlers should clean, trim, and file their fingernails before coming to
practice and matches. The purpose of this is to avoid scratching or cutting
your wrestling partners or opponents.
- It is very important that each wrestler showers and cleans themselves thoroughly
after each practice and tournament. Not only will you smell and look much nicer,
but you will also reduce the possibility of getting or transmitting the dreaded
"ringworm" to others. You should understand that ringworm isn't really any sort of
worm, but rather a fungus, and is very similar to athletes foot. As a team, we try
to prevent this problem by advocating cleanliness with our wrestlers, and by
cleaning our mats with a fungicide prior to each practice.
- You should also wash your workout clothes after every practice. This includes not
only your clothing, but your headgear, kneepads, and shoes.
Hi! My name is Ringy the Ringworm. If you don't shower and keep yourself clean,
I'll surely come and visit you. I may even bring along a few friends, like Jacque
Itcherts and Al Thleetsfeet.
